Kamma: One should dare to stand by oneself and one’s own selfish dreams

Kamma gives you the courage to speak up about your feelings, to draw a line and to set boundaries. On April 23, 2021, she will release her debut EP "Momentary Emotions", written and produced in collaboration with Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes, Psyched Up Janis).

For the 26 year old Signe Rønsov “Kamma” is not just any kind of music project. It is a space she has created in which the talented singer songwriter has managed to express her inner self, her fragility and her intimacy. Here she can breathe, shout out loud and set boundaries - and at the same time describe a life, which has been filled with alot of emotional ups and downs stemming from a hurtful past.

As the daughter of a parent with Alzheimer's, Signe experienced that her own space in the family became smaller and smaller as her mother’s illness became worse. It became a struggle for her to find room for the same development of identity that all of her friends were undergoing, and to live the life of a normal teenager where boundaries are both tested and discovered.

“There were a lot of years where my life was set aside because of my mother’s illness. I did everything that I could to not cause any unnecessary worries for my parents, which meant that I had to follow a straight path and draw too much attention to myself. Just like my self confidence my dreams were boxed and put far away”

As a consequence of this, it became harder and harder for Signe to identify her own opinions and boundaries. To limit her volume as much as possible she put herself in the slipstream of other people's opinions and demeanors and thereby became what one would call a pleaser.

But one day everything changed for Signe. During a visit to one of her friends, she was confronted with her own behavior, when her friend asked her: “Signe, you never say no to anyone - you are always telling me what I want to hear, why are you doing this?”. It surely was a heavy thump in the stomach, but a very necessary one of the kind, and the confrontation became the kick-off to a huge development in the young singer’s life.

“It was a crazy eyeopener, but it was just so cool, that she even dared to confront me with it. She did what the majority of people do not dare to do. What an amazing friend! All of a sudden I could see it better from the outside and I could talk openly about it with her. From that point on I was able to build up my self esteem gradually and practiced the fine art of saying no”

For the young musician setting boundaries has meant losing some close people, who have not been able to handle it. But it has also enabled her to create a space for herself, which she lacked and which today is crucial for her well-being:

“One of the most important things for me today is therefore daring to stand by myself and my selfish dreams, and to keep reminding myself that it is okay for me to be someone other than the young woman whose mom is sick.”

On March 26, 2021, Kamma is ready with the second single, "Heartbroken", from her upcoming debut EP. Like the EP, the song is written and produced in collaboration with Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes, Psyched up Janis), who on this specific track is also featured in duet with Kamma. Together, he and Kamma have created an alternative pop universe that draws threads back to icons like Bjørk and Kate Bush with a modern twist in production.

The single "Heartbroken" is out on March 26, 2021 via W.A.S. Entertainment, and the EP "Momentary Emotions" is out on April 23, 2021.
